The Uncomforted

Hair, wigs, wood, seaweed
A doll’s house from which unruly black hair grows, a hairy doll wearing a costume with a house embedded in its belly, a video of two obscured legs submerged in water surrounded by seaweed resembling hair, or an embroidery of a house growing out of a tree. The Uncomforted is a multimedia installation that consists of one video, two sculptures, and a piece of embroidery that explore discomfort and domesticity. The doll’s house is a place of idealized order, a space where everything is contained and meticulously arranged. Yet, this sense of control feels unsettling as this imposed order contrasts so sharply with the unpredictable and chaotic nature of lived experience. It reflects an ideal, a fantasy that we are meant to inhabit yet never truly live up to. This makes it so uneasy, as it blends our most intimate dreams and fantasies with confinement and discomfort.
